What do I do in a crisis?
Call 911 for immediate assistance.
If you feel that you can safely manage the situation, you may take the individual to the nearest ER or to Regional’s Strawhun Center at 8555 Taft Street in Merrillville. We have an Emergency Services team that will assist. If you are able, call first to advise that you are on the way.

How do I know if I need to talk with someone?
Just asking the question indicates that you probably should! When you have issues that are disrupting your ability to complete your daily tasks, it’s time to get some intervention.

Do I need a referral before receiving treatment?
Anyone can request services. Referrals come to us from physicians, schools, hospitals, lawyers, employers, clergy, other professionals, and friends and family.

How do I make an appointment?
Call 219-769-4005 or 888-398-7050 anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may also stop in Monday through Friday at 3903 Indianapolis Boulevard in East Chicago from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., or 8555 Taft Street in Merrillville from 8:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Will my insurance cover the cost of treatment?
Many services are covered by private insurance, managed care contract, HMO, Medicaid, Medicare or others. You may contact your insurance directly for covered providers or our client service representatives will help you determine coverage and payment agreements.

How much do services cost?
As a non-profit, our fees are comparable to other providers and are based on the cost of providing services. Insurance, preferred provider and managed care plans may cover treatment. Indiana residents may qualify for fee assistance with our sliding scale based on income and family size. Staff will assist with determining coverage and designing a payment plan to fit your circumstances.

What are the visiting hours and visitor policies for inpatient/residential programs?
For the inpatient psych unit, visiting hours are 2 until 3 p.m. and 7 until 8 p.m. daily in the commons area only. Special visiting arrangements can be made if these hours present great difficulty to visitors. Children under age 14 are not allowed to visit.

For the residential substance abuse program at the Strawhun Center in Merrillville, visiting hours are 6 until 7 p.m. on Saturdays. We also do Family Night group Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 until 8 p.m.

For Recovery Matter at the Stark Center in East Chicago, visiting hours are: 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Family therapy is on Saturdays from 10:30 until11:30 a.m.

For visitors at all locations:
Leave lighters, cigarettes, food, cell phones, purses, backpacks and other personal belongings in your car. Packages for clients must be checked-in with staff.

Any visitor suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave immediately.

How do I get my loved one into treatment?
Encourage them to call at any time to schedule an appointment. You may initiate the call and give some information first to show your support, but those over the age of 18 must request services for themselves.

What do I do if my friend or family is continuing to abuse substances or won’t take their psychiatric medication?
Encourage them to comply with their treatment program and notify the Regional employee that assists them. You may contact Emergency Services 24 hours a day to give information that will be relayed to the person’s treatment provider.

What are my responsibilities as a client?

How long is the detox and rehab program?
Recovery Matters at the Stark Center in East Chicago offers a maximum detoxification time of five days, and the maximum length of residential rehab is thirty days.

At the Strawhun Center in Merrillville detox is conducted on an outpatient basis, and residential rehabilitation service averages eight to ten days.

What should I bring with me inpatient psych and residential substance abuse?
Enough clothing for four to five days and toiletries.

Can I smoke at Regional?
No. Smoking is not allowed in any Regional facility or on the grounds. For those clients that are staying in a program, you may talk with a doctor about using a nicotine patch.

Are mental health professionals available to speak to community organizations?
Our staff is ready to speak to groups about more than 30 topics ranging from AIDS education to managing depression to sexual abuse trauma to gambling problems. Seminars and professional development workshops can be customized to fit your needs.

We’re accredited and/or licensed by several organizations, including The Joint Commission, the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addictions, and American Psychological Association.

What is Regional Mental Health Center’s philosophy?
Regional Mental Health Center recognizes all aspects of a person and promotes a balanced, whole view of the person. Each client is evaluated on an individual basis, and participates in programs designed specifically to meet his or her needs. A major goal is the restoration of one’s self-confidence and sense of responsibility. Clients are encouraged to do as much as possible for themselves, and to actively participate in their treatment planning and progress. The Regional Mental Health Center staff will facilitate and support each person’s pursuit of self-understanding and personal balance. Regional believes that each person is ultimately responsible for his or her own behavior.
